New Year 9 program BAMBU: Developing Courage, Curiosity and Character
We are excited to introduce BAMBU, Firbank’s new signature Year 9 global experiential education program. Building on our commitment to innovative and rigorous learning experiences, BAMBU has been developed in partnership with Green School in Indonesia to provide every Year 9 student with an immersive curriculum experience that develops courage, curiosity and character.
BAMBU is not simply a camp, a tour or an overseas trip. Commencing in 2027, and taking place at Green School in Indonesia, it is a core component of the Year 9 curriculum and a launch point into the senior years. Every Year 9 student will participate in a shared learning journey that connects classroom learning with real-world issues and opportunities.
At the heart of BAMBU is Learning in Action. Through interdisciplinary, project-based learning across Science, English, Humanities and the Arts, students will explore authentic challenges and develop thoughtful responses. Working alongside educators and students from Green School, they will engage in sustainability and regenerative practices, cultural immersion, community service, creative arts workshops and problem-solving projects that transform learning into meaningful action.
Equally important is Values in Action. BAMBU has been intentionally designed to develop character, resilience and purpose. Students will explore questions such as, What does it mean to be a person of good character in a complex world? They will be encouraged to reflect on how their learning shapes their actions, relationships and contribution to others. Through challenge, reflection and service, students will build greater independence, empathy and confidence
The name BAMBU comes from the Indonesian word for bamboo, one of nature’s most resilient and regenerative plants. It symbolises the adaptability, growth and interconnectedness we seek to develop in every Firbank student.
Our vision is simple: that every student leaves BAMBU with a stronger sense of self, a deeper understanding of their responsibility to others, and the confidence to create positive change in the world.
We are incredibly excited to launch this unique program and to see our Year 9 students embrace the challenge and personal growth that BAMBU will inspire.
