GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Vision for Learning

At Firbank Grammar School, our seven principles form the foundation of our pedagogical model. They provide a framework for creating a rigorous, purposeful, and high-impact learning environment, reflecting our commitment to evidence-based teaching, the cultivation of curiosity, and the holistic development of each student.

Our principles in action are how we deliver learning in every lesson through the environment, efficacy, engagement and evaluation. We know that learning and wellbeing are inextricably linked; students learn best when their wellbeing is optimised.

Firbank Grammar’s Principles ensure that learning is visible, intentional, evidence-informed, and responsive. Each lesson is framed by clear learning intentions, supported by appropriate scaffolds, and assessed through both formative and summative measures. Teachers respond to student data and evidence of learning to adapt their practice and support student success.

By integrating these 7 Principles with the latest research in teaching and learning, Firbank Grammar ensures that students experience a transformative, high-quality education that prepares them for lifelong learning and personal growth.

Every student is encouraged to be challenged and supported within a learning environment that balances high expectations with personalised care. Signature programs such as Firbank Futures, Firbank Academic Mentoring Program (FAMP), The Edge Saturday sessions and Wednesday Asynchronous Learning (WAL) ensure students are appropriately challenged and encouraged to excel throughout their learning journey.

Learning at Firbank Grammar prepares students not only for success at school, but for the opportunities they will encounter beyond it. Our goal is to develop confident learners who are ready to adapt, contribute and make a meaningful impact in a rapidly changing world.

“A key message for students is that effective study should not always feel comfortable. Productive struggle — where students grapple with uncertainty, make errors, and demonstrate grit and resilience — is a feature of deep learning, not a sign of failure.”
