About Brighton Early Learning Centre (ELC)
Our Early Years students play such an integral role in Turner House, reimagining and inspiring our view of childhood. We are focused on providing a caring and nurturing environment that promotes wonder and curiosity and a desire to continually ask ‘Why?’ I am so excited to be an active participant in a place of and for learning for children, teachers, parents and the community – an authentic and joyful ‘learning community’.
“Love and joy should rank above all else in the life of any school.” Maud Cameron, Firbank Grammar Principal from 1911 – 1954.
Neuroscience and research forms the basis for what we do in our Early Learning Centre and places the interests of the child at the centre of all decision making. As a result, we are committed to promoting and sustaining the rights of children to build strong, long-lasting and constant relationships and friendships. This is evidenced in:
- Providing an in-house Atelierista that provides Creative Arts specialisation, responsive to the ‘in the moment’ interests and passions of the children.
- Opportunities to develop relationships with Buddies from the Junior School.
- Regular connections with teachers and students from other areas of the School; and
- Our development of a continuous learning pathway that deliberately promotes the successful transition between ELC and Prep.
We began 2019 with a refurbished Early Learning Centre, a space offering opportunities for creativity, imagination and innovation. Not only has the environment been custom-built to cater for the needs of our capable young people, but our program has also been enhanced to offer a flexible Long Day Care option for families. Core to our transformation is a commitment to enhance the STEM curriculum for our children and to create an environment that promotes the idea that STEM careers are within their reach.
If you walk through our Reggio Emilia inspired Early Learning Centre, you will observe children supported as strong, capable, and resilient learners, encouraged to be curious and to follow their interests. Deliberate provocations draw on children’s scientific minds to experiment and learn through play. With the knowledge that learning starts at birth and continues throughout life, we offer a myriad of learning opportunities for our community including weekly ‘Stay and Play’ playgroup sessions for babies and toddlers.
We welcome families to join our Firbank learning journey; an ongoing journey that starts in the Early Learning Centre and continuously progresses as students make their way through the School and beyond. What we do know, is that by partnering with us in the education of your daughter, she will have opportunities to develop skills and dispositions to make her ‘Life Ready’, and prepared to contribute to creating a better and more peaceful world.
