Latest from Year 2
A highlight of the last week has been Year 2’s sleepover at Scienceworks. The students enjoyed visiting the planetarium and using iPads to search the night sky for constellations. They also toured the pumping station and tested their sporting agility in Sportsworks.
Our writing focus has been one sided arguments. The students listened to the story, ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ and wrote an expository text based on the perspective of a crayon. To conclude our genre focus the students are writing their own exposition texts based on an issue they feel strongly about.
The unit of inquiry, How we organise ourselves, has provided the students with the opportunity to investigate different systems within our community. Working with a partner they investigated the form, function and connection of their chosen system. When ordering the importance of community based systems, the students discovered that all systems are dependent upon each other.
Our unit, Sharing the planet has just concluded. We had a great excursion to Werribee Zoo allowing the students to see animals in a grassland habitat and learn about their survival needs. Throughout our unit the students conducted personal inquiries into an ecosystem of their choice, they were required to conduct research using both books and iPads. They researched food chains, the interdependence between plants and animals in the ecosystem and how we can protect the ecosystem in the future. The students presented their findings using the app ‘Book Creator’ or ‘Explain Everything.’ We were very impressed with their effort and they did a wonderful job delivering their presentation to their peers. We look forward to out upcoming excursion to Brighton Beach where the students will explore and investigate the foreshore, rock pool and bay ecosystems.
