Supper, Sax and Swing Evening
Friday 31 August 2018
Oh what a night! The Friends of Music ladies transformed the CCA into a swinging, magical wonderland for the Firbank bands to shine at their inaugural Supper, Sax and Swing Evening on Friday 31 August. The venue was packed with family, friends and students as the Bands impressively strutted their repertoire from slow numbers to high oxygen swing music. A spit roast dinner was served as families moved into the groove and by the time plates were cleared, the dance floor was already beginning to sway. A parent band, ‘Down For The Count’, took the guests into the end of the evening. This provided an opportunity for the girls to dance with their parents, grandparents and friends following their extremely professional performances. This was a night to remember … and one not to be missed next year!

Generations of Jazz Festival, Mt Gambier
The annual Generations in Jazz Festival was held this last weekend in Mt Gambier, South Australia. The event now has around 5000 participants who travel from all over Australia to perform and listen to some great Big Band music.
The Firbank Big Band – Alani Sharp, Taylor Lyons, Bryony Stringer, Milly Jasper, Ivy Chen, Emma Coates, Imogen Smillie, Eliza Planincic, Mabel McCahon, Mia Eng, Josie Best, Hannah Tay, Ella Ross and Maddy Jordan – has been involved in the festival over many years. All would agree this year’s was one of the best. The band placed fifth in a division with 24 bands and were justifiably proud of their efforts. They received many comments from other students and Band Directors congratulating them for their musicality and ability to blend together. Solos by Mia and Bryony were well crafted and beautifully played.
The Friday night concert featured the great American Jazz singer Patti Austin as she entertained us with many stories and an amazing voice. Saturday night was a brilliant concert featuring The Cat Empire, the whole place was literally jumping to this powerhouse band.
The festival provides so much inspiration to players of all abilities and is not to be missed! We are already choosing music for next year’s event!
