Performing Arts

“To me, Theatre Studies is a subject that I could not do without. It’s a creative outlet where I can try new things. Sometimes it’s scary to put yourself out there, but this subject has helped me let go and become fearless, mostly due to the safe environment that is created by Ms Anstee and the students. I know the skills I learn in Theatre Studies will help me throughout my life.” Stevie-Lou, Year 12.

The Firbank integrated drama centre  produces and performs three major productions (Senior School, Middle School and Junior School) a year in conjunction with Brighton Grammar. From leading roles to front-of-house promotions, students are involved in every aspect of these productions with performances being the highlight of the Firbank calendar.

Opportunities exist for students from Years 7–12 to pursue their love of performance outside the classroom. From small scale experimental, original theatre to large scale and impressive Musical Theatre, there is plenty for young actors, writers and dancers to sink their teeth into:

  • Drama Club, run by the Drama Captain and Senior students for girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 culminates in a performance, either scripted or group-devised.
  • Large Scale Musicals are rehearsed and performed with Brighton Grammar School.
  • ‘Dance Like No-one is Watching’ is completely student run, choreographed and performed, with all styles of dance represented and is a highlight of the Performing Arts Calendar.
  • Firbank’s Got Talent is run by the Student Representative Council and judged by external industry professionals.
  • House Music and Drama Festival, for Years 7–11, is hotly contended.  The artistic Year 11 students  write their own scripts, choreograph dances, direct the actors, stage-manage the production, select, arrange and perform vocal and instrumental music that feeds into the story-telling and operate lighting, sound and multimedia. This event is adjudicated by external judges who are specialists in their field.
