Music at Firbank
BIG BAND BASH
Friday 25 October 2013
Another great evening to finish a very busy musical year! Congratulations to all the students who performed at the Big Band Bash! It was a fun evening with students from the Junior Campuses strutting their stuff with the senior students, parents and friends catching up with each other over dinner, and everyone enjoying the music!
YEAR 9 MUSIC PERFORMANCE
Wednesday 30 October 2013
The Year 9 girls who have been studying music performance during Semester 2 showcased their talents at this recital evening. The audience was entertained with performances on a wide variety of instruments from drum kit to trumpet to voice. It is pleasing to note such musical talent coming through the school.
Congratulations to Zoe Lineham (Year 11) on achieving her A.Mus.A Diploma last week! This is an outstanding achievement.
UNA FESTA DI MUSICA
Combined Concert with Brighton Grammar School - Melbourne Recital Centre on Monday 5 August 2013
What a memorable night! What a fantastic concert! Our students shone on the stage of this magnificent, world class venue. An experience they will always remember.
Congratulations to all students from Sandringham House, Turner House and the Senior School who were involved with this concert. All performances were exceptional and showcased the talent and dedication of our music students.
Patricia Turner Centre for Creative Arts, Senior Campus, Brighton
One of the major musical highlights of the year was, once again, our Choral Concert. The concert featured choirs from both junior campuses, as well as those from the Senior School. This year we welcomed a visiting choir from Ascham School in Sydney The girls from Ascham spent the afternoon in a workshop with our senior auditioned choirs (Bel Canto and Chamber Singers) and later perfomed in the concert. This was a first for Firbank which presented exciting opportunities for the students from both schools.
Vocal Tour 2014
We are very excited to announce that there will be a Bel Canto tour to Salzburg and Vienna in June/July 2014. The main purpose of this tour is to participate in the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival, held in Vienna in early July each year, for choirs, bands and orchestras.
Held in Vienna’s two main classical concert venues, the Golden Hall of the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus, it offers an international environment where a thousand young musicians enjoy intercultural exchanges and build bridges that span continents.
See Overseas Tour page.
Bel Canto at the Kodaly Autumn Seminar
Saturday 18 May 2013
Firbank’s senior auditioned choir, Bel Canto, were so eager to sing that they spent their entire Saturday being involved in the Kodaly Autumn Seminar in Preston! The day started with a workshop with David Lawrence and, as Charlotte (Year 10) said "The workshop was really helpful, and brought about ideas that we hadn’t considered before." The girls learnt some new techniques, and many points made by Ms Jones were reinforced . After the workshop, Bel Canto gave a perfect performance for music teachers and Kodaly experts, and learnt that the show must go on, even with one man (or woman in this case) down! Shajeda (Year 10) said ‘It was an interesting experience performing in front of learned musicians who were able to critique us from an experienced musical perspective.’ The girls in Bel Canto thank Ms Jones for this wonderful opportunity to learn so much more about their craft.
Monday 3 June 2013
The first Piano Recital for the year showcased 28 of our pianists from across the three campuses, from the junior grades through to VCE Music students, and was well received by an enthusiastic audience. Due to the large numbers of piano students at the school, this yearly recital has now been split in two, with the second recital to be held in September. These recitals give the opportunity for all piano students to perform and, this year, they all enjoyed the experience of playing on our new grand piano! The students were delighted when Mr Richard Knurek (one of our senior piano teachers) took to the keys and played a Mozart Sonata.
VCE Music Performance Recital
Tuesday 4 June 2013
The first semester VCE Music Performance Recital highlighted some of our most experienced and talented music students. It was a joy to listen to these students present their pieces and marvel at the work that has been undertaken by them to achieve this level.
Wednesday 27 March
The end of Term 1 heralded the annual Jazz Night which, despite the intense weather conditions (37 degrees C) was a great night of music and entertainment! All the students performed exceptionally well in very difficult conditions (hot!), as the photos will attest, and the performances were greatly appreciated by a melting audience!
Sunday 28 April
The Stage Band performed at the inaugural Brighton North Rotary Club Jazz Jamboree on Sunday 28 April in Kamesburgh Gardens in Brighton. The band kicked off proceedings and were fine ambassadors for Firbank as they executed a great performance.
Music Scholars Recital
Monday 29 April
This recital is traditionally held in Term 3, but this year was moved to the beginning of Term 2. It was sheer delight to see our music scholarship students have the opportunity to perform independently and shine. We are proud to have such talent amongst us!
Generations in Jazz Festival - Mt Gambier
3 May – 5 May
Once again Firbank’s Stage Band and Vocal Ensemble travelled to Mt Gambier for the annual Generations In Jazz Festival. The group travelled to Mt Gambier on Friday and performed on Saturday morning, with Stage Band competing in Division 3.2 and the Vocal Ensemble competing in Division 2. When not performing themselves, the girls were able to watch schools from around Australia play, and enjoyed the concerts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday featuring The Idea of North, Megan Washington, Ross Irwin, James Morrison and, for the first time at GIJ, Gordon Goodwin and the “Big Phat Band”. It was a great opportunity for everyone involved and a very enjoyable weekend. The Vocal Ensemble placed 8th of 27, and Stage Band placed 11th of 23, with Georgina Garner (Year 9) and Claire Tate (Year 12) being nominated for the Division 3 Super Band.
